Taking out multiple credit cards is generally not the right way to build credit. You can start building credit with just one credit card or a credit builder loan.

There are 5 major components of a credit score.

    1. Payment History - Making on time payments on all your credit obligations including rent, credit card, and loans. Even if you have just one card, on time payments will be a strong positive for your score.
    2. Credit Utilization - More cards help with lower utilization if your expenses aren't too high. With one card, your utilization will be higher. So, having multiple cards can help. Ideal utilization is < 30%.
    3. Length of Credit History - This is independent of the number of cards you have. A longer credit history helps you improve your score.
    4. Credit Mix - Credit cards are one type of credit. If you have a personal loan, mortgage, an auto loan etc. These show that you can handle multiple types of credit obligations.
    5. New Credit - Low number of recent credit inquiries are important to show that you are not looking for credit all the time.

Based on the above, making on time payments on your credit is the most important factor. The number of credit cards will help in keeping your utilization low but if you mismanage, it can hurt in the longer run. Building credit takes time but it will help you maintain positive credit habits in the longer run.
