Effective January 17, 2017, an H-1B visa holder who is terminated from their job officially has 60 days after the termination date to find another job or get out of the country. Some companies offer a standard severance package to their terminated employees. Companies are also required by law to pay for the repatriation ticket of the employees (dependents are not included) to their home countries. If the employee finds another job within the grace period, an H-1B visa transfer should be applied by the new employer. The visa holder does not need to exit the US and can immediately start with the new job upon the H-1B visa transfer filing.
