A TN visa is a temporary work visa given to Mexican and Canadian citizens to work inside the US. It is valid for three years and can be renewed indefinitely. Compared to other non-immigrant visas, like H-1 and L-1, TN visa has several disadvantages that its holders should know.

    1. TN visa does not have a direct path to a green card. It does not have a “dual” intent” that gives international workers pathway for permanent residence, unlike H-1B visa and L-1 visa. For Canadians and Mexicans who are hopeful for an immigrant status, TN visa is not right for you.
    2. Although TN visa can be renewed indefinitely, the short three-year validity can still be a downside because the renewal approval is not always assured. That means every three years, TN visa holders are uncertain if they can stay in the US or they have to go back to their countries.
    3. The Spouse and Children on TD visa are not allowed to work in the US. Yes, TN visa holders are allowed to bring dependents to the US and they can stay as long as the TN visa is valid. However, they are not authorized to be employed. They must get their own valid working visa to do so.

Note: This is not a legal advice.
