Only those F-1 visa holders with majors in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are eligible to extend their Optional Practical Training (OPT). They can apply for 24-month extension of their OPT. The qualifications for the 24-month extension are the following:
1. Must be on a valid OPT during the time of application.
2. Must have attained a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree from a university that is accredited by the US Education System and certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
3. Must work for a company who fulfill all the requirements indicated in the STEM OPT Employer Responsibilities.
4. Must submit Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization) to the USCIS 90 days before the current OPT expires, and within 60 days upon the submission of recommendation for OPT in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) by the designated school official.
When applying for STEM OPT extension, you need to submit Form I-765, Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status and a copy of your STEM degree. The processing time can take up to 90 days.
