How do I get an auto loan without credit history as a H-1B visa holder?

This is a fairly common problem for people from other countries for work in the U.S.

As people on H-1B move here, they need to get a car to get to work comfortably. They are employed in areas where public transport may be minimal to non-existent. Without a credit history, it's a challenge for lenders to approve them for an auto loan and people don't have enough to pay for the car. Most dealers also ask for a downpayment, which is to protect them in case a car loses its value.

H-1B visa holders can't build credit history fast enough to get approved for a loan and dealers try to take advantage of this to charge them high APRs (20%+). At Stilt, we give these people personal loans that they can use to buy a car and pay over time as they earn income. This initial support helps people get settled and get to work on time.

This may be a small thing in retrospect but access to a car significantly improves the quality of lifestyle in the U.S. If you are looking for an auto loan, don't get settled for a high APR loan. Choose a loan that gives you the lowest rates even if it's a personal loan.

Several of our borrowers have found that our personal loan APR has been lower than an auto loan APR from a dealer.
